Dave Kroupa recently relocated to Omaha to be closer to his two children, whom he shares with his ex-girlfriend Amy Flora. After being single for quite some time, he was interested in finding a partner for a casual relationship. Through a dating website, he met Liz Goylar and they casually dated for a few months. One day, Cari Farver visited his garage for car maintenance and they hit it off when they met again on the dating site. Since his relationship with Liz was not serious, Dave thought it was acceptable to date both women. After a few weeks, Liz encountered Cari at Dave's place while picking up some belongings. Following this brief meeting, Cari texted Dave suggesting they move in together. When Dave declined, emphasizing the casual nature of their relationship, Cari began sending him threatening messages. The situation escalated quickly with threats towards Liz and signs of stalking. Despite efforts by the Omaha police detective to catch Cari in the act, she remained elusive. Meanwhile, Cari's mother, residing in Iowa's Pottawattamie County, reported her missing after losing contact. However, since Cari was still communicating with Dave through menacing messages, authorities assumed she was intentionally hiding. Subsequently, Dave received messages claiming Cari was inside Liz's residence. The stalking and threats reached a climax when Liz's house was set on fire, prompting both Liz and Dave to relocate. A year later, when detectives in Pottawattamie County delved into the emails and texts, the case took an unexpected turn. As previously mentioned, Hobkinson maintained a straightforward approach in presenting the central case of Lover, Stalker, Killer. The only deviation from this style was the reenactments involving Kroupa, which served a specific purpose.The narrative itself is incredibly intricate, rendering unnecessary any elaborate stylistic embellishments from Hobkinson to maintain reader engagement. In the initial portion of the movie, prior to the involvement of the investigative trio in Pottawattamie County — Kava, Jim Doty, and Ryan Avis — Hobkinson adeptly creates a convincing portrayal of Cari as the perpetrator stalking and tormenting Kroupa. However, he subtly introduces elements that sow seeds of doubt in the viewer's mind. Consequently, the eventual revelation of the plot twist comes as a powerful blow, catching even those who had anticipated its arrival off guard.
